Building Tomorrow’s Leaders

Reflecting on my career journey- A few years ago, I worked in a Gas power plant, which was one of the most memorable seasons of my career. My job was a crucial one as it required the design, engineering, and installation of some industrial gas assets for a client. Looking back, I’m immensely grateful for the experience and the managers who guided me along the way.

But how did I find myself in that position?

My transition into Tech

My tech journey began during my undergraduate days at Covenant University (I’ll delve into this later).

After transitioning from hardware engineering, I found myself in an organisation that fostered skill acquisition. I participated in Python and data visualisation sessions, albeit briefly, due to my job responsibilities. Despite the limited time I had, those sessions significantly impacted my career.

I attribute much of my growth to the guidance of tech mentors. Some I admired from afar, while others I had the privilege of listening to up close.

A Missing link

Mentors play a crucial role in the tech industry. When I embarked on my journey to learn data science and machine learning, I extensively relied on online resources to get myself running (I still do :) ).

In industries like ML and data science, domain expertise is highly valued. Without it, interpreting certain categories of data becomes challenging.

Mentorship Community

Communities are one of the best places to grow a career. I’ve experienced significant growth in data science & big tech through active participation in communities.

Besides the community, observation has been one of my most valuable learning avenues. By observing experienced individuals, I’ve gained invaluable insights. Before writing my first #python #sql statement/code, I spent time observing those who had previously written similar code.

Mentors in tech are individuals you aspire to emulate or from whom you seek to learn. Learning from a mentor doesn’t always require being in the same physical space; valuable lessons can be gleaned through observation and other channels.

Find me a tech mentor/mentee

Our goal is to connect over 1 million tech mentors with mentees in big tech and AI across the globe. If you find this initiative interesting and wish to participate as either a mentee or mentor, kindly sign-up;
